HTC has confirmed that last year’s One M8 handset will receive an Android M upgrade. The company has already confirmed the software will reach its latest devices, but those with older units have been asking the question ever since Android M was confirmed by Google.
“Yes, the M8 will receive the M OS update,” HTC Product Manager Mo Versi confirmed to fans on Twitter, more than a month after HTC Senior Global Online Communications Manager Jeff Gordon promised the One M9 and One M9+ would get Android M.
It’s not too surprising that the One M8 will be supported by Android M, given that it is just 16 months old, and HTC normally supports its handsets for at least two years. However, it’s not clear how old the One M8 will be when HTC’s Android M updates are actually ready to rollout to users.
Google has promised to release the software this fall, but it will take longer for HTC and other third parties to prepare the software for their own devices. With that in mind, we likely won’t see too many Android M updates for non-Nexus devices until early 2016.
