Windows 10 launch: Microsoft details global celebrations

by Todd Haselton | July 13, 2015

Microsoft on Monday offered a brief update on how Windows 10 will launch around the globe on July 29. The company said that, beginning at that time, you’ll be able to purchase new Windows 10 systems from retailers, and upgrades will start to be available for supported machines. It also plans to celebrate the launch with the 5 million Windows Insiders who helped test the early betas.

The company will host special events in 13 cities around the world specifically catered to Insiders, Microsoft said. Launch events will occur in Sydney, Tokyo, Singapore, Beijing, New Delhi, Dubai, Nairobi, Berlin, Johannesburg, Madrid, London, Sao Paolo, and New York City, where folks can play with the release build of Windows 10 and meet some of Microsoft’s Windows 10 team. 110 Microsoft Stores will also offer Windows 10 workshops.

Microsoft said it also teamed up with plenty of retailers, including Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Currys/PC World and more, that can help folks upgrade to Windows 10 (though it didn’t say whether or not you’ll need to pay for that assistance, and we assume you will.)

All of this will be supported by large marketing campaigns, Microsoft said. And rightfully so; Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 were a bust, and this is going to be a huge launch for Microsoft that we think fans are going to like a lot more.
