Snapchat update puts Discover right into your main feed

Snapchat-update

Snapchat on Monday received an update, and depending on your feelings toward Discover, it might be more significant than you think.

When you jump into your Stories page, Discover is now one of the first things you see. As you can see in the screenshot above, Snapchat will now show you your story, with Discover just under that. Up next will be stories of interest that are live around the world, along with recent updates from friends that you follow.

Before, Discover had its own page separate from your own feed, giving you the option to visit it or not. By all accounts, Discover has been a huge success, with partners saying people visit the page daily. But judging by this move, maybe it wasn’t quite as successful as Snapchat had hoped. That’s just pure speculation on my part, but seeing it show up in the main feed leads me to believe Snapchat needs more eyeballs on the content partners are putting out.

The way it’s presented isn’t particularly obnoxious, but it’s still a little intrusive in that it’s right there at the top of your feed—and it doesn’t look like there’s anything you can do about it. Plus, Discover still has its own page, so it looks like Snapchat is really going all out on the feature.

The very best thing about Snapchat for me are the live stories, which are often location-specific (and sometimes not). I’d love to be able to choose a specific location so I can continually follow a story, like for Ireland or New York, or other places around the world. As much as I love seeing a live story for my hometown of Huntington Beach, it would be more amazing if I could choose to follow bigger cities around the world, just to get out of my own little bubble.

In any case, the change is rolling out now to Snapchat for iOS, and will presumably make its way to Android soon.
