Film Fondue: New Spider-Man costume, and Fantastic Four/X-Men crossover

by Brandon Russell | July 11, 2015July 11, 2015 9:30 am PDT

We’re in the home stretch of Comic-Con 2015, and it looks like Lucasfilm may have stolen the show with its presentation of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Director J.J. Abrams didn’t release any new footage of the movie, though he did show off a behind the scenes video, which showed of new creatures, old friends and a very, very enthusiastic cast.

The main point Lucasfilm wanted fans to take away from its event is that The Force Awakens is in very good hands. There will no longer be an over-reliance on CGI; this time it’s all about practical effects. J.J. Abrams said they built hundreds of monsters for the film, which tells you what kind of commitment went into making it.

This year, more than ever, there’s been a big emphasis on content, with new shows, returning shows, and a focus on what’s to come. Fear the Walking Dead looks great, and Ash vs Evil Dead could be the surprise of this fall. We still have a big Saturday to come, so stay tuned.

Daredevil 2 filming underway

I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for season 2 of Daredevil. Some big characters have already been confirmed to join the cast, including The Punisher and Elektra, so let’s get this show on the road! Luckily, filming has already begun for Matt Murdock’s next adventure, which hopefully means we’ll see an early 2016 release for season 2. Above are some images straight from the set, though they don’t reveal much at all. Just know that the cast and crew are hard at work on bringing us more great content.

Ghostbusters 3 villain confirmed

It’s full steam ahead for Paul Feig’s all-female Ghostbusters, and now the villain role has been filled. The Ghostbusters universe has featured some pretty memorable baddies in the past, so we’re going to have some high expectations for the next one. Filling that role will be former SNL member Neil Casey, though we’re not entirely sure what kind of villain he’ll play. Will he be a regular human set on destroying humanity? Or some sort of spectral being that just wants to scare the bejesus out of everyone? [HollywoodReporter]

Fantastic Four 2 and X-Men crossover

We always want to report rumors with skepticism, but this one is too juicy to pass up. Apparently 20th Century Fox wants Bryan Singer, who is directing X-Men: Apocalypse, to helm Fantastic Four 2. Now here’s where it gets good: Singer will apparently direct the sequel in an effort to set up a crossover with the X-Men universe, opening up a ton of possibilities. Of course, we have to wait and see if the first Fantastic Four is even any good before we start getting so far ahead of ourselves. [ScreenCrush]

Iron Giant re-release

Oh my goodness. One of the best animated movies of all time is coming back to theaters in a limited capacity, and you shouldn’t pass up this opportunity to miss it. If you haven’t seen Iron Giant yet, you’re in for a treat. For longtime fans, it’s confirmation that this beloved tale about a giant robot and a young boy is one of the best ever put to film. In addition to a re-release, The Iron Giant: Signature Edition will be available to purchase later this fall. I know what I want for Christmas. [ComingSoon]

Marisa Tomei as Aunt May

Multiple outlets claim that Marisa Tomei is the top choice for Aunt May in the next Spider-Man. In fact, Tomei could appear as early as next year’s Captain America: Civil War, which is when we’re expecting our first look at Tom Holland as the new web slinger. I associate Aunt May with someone who is older, so the casting doesn’t really appear to fit. But we never thought Paul Rudd would make for a good superhero, and look at how that turned out. [ComingSoon]

Faster home movie releases

Paramount Pictures is reportedly hoping to speed up the time between a theatrical release and home release, making movies available just two weeks after they leave the theater. That means you won’t have to wait months and months before you can rent or buy a movie like Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation. I’m all for that. When movies leave the theater, there’s typically a few month gap before a film comes out on video. Hopefully every studio jumps on this approach when/if it gets put into practice. [WSJ]

New Spider-Man costume “Will blow you away”

According to Marvel’s Joe Quesada, the new Spider-Man costume will blow audiences away. In a recent interview, Quesada said that “it looks awesome,” and will have audiences going, “Ah, that’s Marvel doing Spider-Man.” We should get a glimpse at the new suit as early as Captain America: Civil War, which is set for a May 6, 2016 release.
