Well, we have our big announcement for Dragon Quest this week. Nope, it’s not Dragon Quest Monsters 3. No, it’s definitely not Dragon Quest XI. It certainly is not confirmation of the 3DS remakes being localized either.
Grab your hats before they get blown away, kids! It’s Dragon Quest Builders for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PS Vita! What the heck is Dragon Quest Builders? Well, it’s exactly what it looks like. A generic Dragon Quest character walks into the world of Minecraft, only its populated with the traditional Dragon Quest monsters. From there, I’m not to sure, but my guess is that you dig up minerals and build houses.
Square Enix has yet to confirm anything else just yet besides one official screenshot, but just look at those element blocks on the official website. Could the inspiration be any less obvious?
I’m giggling to myself over this one. I don’t know if I should point and laugh or just throw my hands in the air in surrender. Not that it is totally out of the blue. The Dragon Quest brand has been used plenty of times to capitalize on trends in the past be it PlayStation “roguelikes,” touch rhythm games, the recent boom in Musou action extravaganzas, and even Pokemon clones of all things!
Moving in on Minecraft continues in this “cash-grabbing” tradition, but when it comes to Dragon Quest “cash grabs”, it has a much better ratio of success than other franchises.
Oh, who am I kidding? I’ll probably buy it. The inner fanboy and burning desire to satisfy him won’t allow me not to. Maybe it’s what I need to finally get into Minecraft.
