Minecraft: Story Mode debut trailer – When Telltale met Mojang

Telltale Games has been rocking major announcements with partnerships any studio would be jealous of, but one of the more unexpected choices was a decision to create an adventure game based on Minecraft. Seven months later, we have our first official Minecraft: Story Mode trailer straight from London Minecon.

Players will control an every-man named Jesse who teams up with a band of generic Minecraft characters as they set out to find the Order of the Stone. These four legendary heroes (a warrior, a redstone engineer, a griefer, and an architect) slayed the Ender Dragon many years before, but have since gone missing. With the world in peril once again, Jesse and his friends must find this Order to save their world.

Sounds like a touch of classic JRPG storytelling tied into Minecraft. Right up my alley, although I have to admit, it is a bit jarring to see voice acting coming from Minecraft people.

“We’ve worked closely with the amazing team at Mojang to ensure this story is a natural fit for the Minecraft world fans already know and love,” said Kevin Bruner, CEO and co-founder of Telltale Games.

“As Jesse, players will steer their own path through a tale of adventure and survival; all brought to life by an all-star cast. Through Telltale’s choice-based gameplay and a story spanning from the Nether to the Farlands, the End, and beyond, we can’t wait for fans to experience this new take on the beloved world of Minecraft…”

“The interactive storytellers at Telltale are giving players the chance to explore their own unique interpretation of the Minecraft universe,” said Owen Hill, Chief Word Officer at Mojang.

“They’ve crafted a story that follows the logic of Minecraft, but still manages to feel original. It’s actually pretty funny too. And the pig is adorable. We’re super excited about players digging deeper into the world of Minecraft: Story Mode later this year.”

You heard the man. Later this year. No release date has been set for Minecraft: Story Mode yet, but it should be out in 2015. It will span Telltale’s standard five episode length, and will no doubt be released on every platform under the sun. More specifically, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PC, Mac, iOS, Android, and Amazon Fire TV. Sorry Nintendo and Vita fans.
