Casio is planning to enter the smartwatch market with a new wearable of its own, according to comments made by the company’s president and chief operating officer Kazuhiro Kashio who took helm of the company in late June. Casio has sold “smartwatches” in the past, such as devices with Bluetooth connections (pictured above), but this sounds like something more advanced and more worthy of the term “smartwatch.”
“We are trying to bring our smartwatch to a level of watch perfection: a device that won’t break easily, is simple to put on and feels good to wear,” Kashio told The Wall Street Journal in a recent interview, noting that the company is aware that a smartwatch might not be immediately successful. Instead, the company hopes that getting its feet wet now will help it prosper long term as smartwatches grow in popularity.
It doesn’t sound like the watch is going to be a device that runs Android Wear or other advanced operating systems. Kashio said it’s for outdoor folks, which suggests it might be some sort of G-Shock type device. “[Casio’s] product will be a watch that tries to be smart, rather than a smart device that is also a watch,” The Wall Street Journal explained.
Casio hopes to sell its smartwatch in the $400 range sometime around March of next year.
