Naughty Dog will launch Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, if all goes according to their current plan, with two separate framerates in mind. The single player campaign will run in 1080p at 30fps, and the multiplayer element will run in 1080p at 60fps.
This comes specifically from a Q&A with the developer following the full length E3 demo’s public release. You can see that gameplay at the head of this post.
Gamespot has the resolution and framerate chat from a few developers. It starts with Co-Lead Designer Anthony Newman regarding their decision to lock the campaign framerate at 30fps.
“We had a really long, involved conversation about it with all the leads and directors…
…We just realized that, for the game we wanted to make, to make the best game possible, [30fps] was just something that we had to do.”
That’s when the other Co-Lead, Kurt Margenau, offered that they “want to have the best-looking game. To have it be consistent, locked 30fps.” Newman immediately said, “to me, a locked 30fps is way better than a variable 60fps.”
That much I’ll agree with. Jitters are more noticeable than a locked, albeit slower, framerate.
“If we wanted to hit a locked 60fps, there’s a lot of optimizations in the environments that would have to happen…
…This would make each level take longer to make. The same amount of geometry would take longer to make because it would have to be so heavily optimized. And so that could end up having story repercussions. ‘We want to have this scene, but we don’t have the time to make the environment.’ It’s a feature, like any other, and you have to consider it against everything else.”
It should be apparent to most everyone by now that creating games like this is about compromise. Compromising features has to happen in order to achieve certain visions and goals.
