The latest news regarding Shenmue III can be seen as either good or bad depending on how you like your Shenmue. If you want to view it as a martial arts epic that has evolved from its turn-of-the-century roots and is to be taken staunch-faced seriously, then maybe you won’t be so thrilled. However, if you see the horrendously bad voice acting as a plus or you want the experience to be as authentic to the first two games as possible, then you’ll be all in!
I fall into the latter group, so I am very pleased to be seeing Corey Marshall, the original voice actor for protagonist Ryo Hazuki, return to the roll that made him infamous.
And I roast with the utmost affection. Corey Marshall is one of the reasons Shenmue remains the most quotable game of all time this side of Star Fox 64. I hope for Shenmue III’s sake, he hasn’t taken any acting lessons. Congratulations! I couldn’t be more thrilled.
Shenmue III has raised $3.8 million through its Kickstarter after Director Yu Suzuki asked for $2 million. It has 16 days left and will be released for the PlayStation 4 and PC.
