Fallout 3 is a pre-order bonus when you pick up Fallout 4 for Xbox One

Fallout 3

Remember when Bethesda went up on stage during Microsoft’s E3 2015 press conference and said you can snag a free copy of Fallout 3 for 90 days if you buy Fallout 4 for the Xbox One? Well, that is the truth. You still can, but Bethesda Blog has just detailed the fine print that was left out.

You’re going to have to pre-order the game if you want that free copy.

We’re excited to announce —  for a limited time – your pre-order of Fallout 4 for Xbox One will entitle you to receive Fallout 3 on Xbox 360. The code for Fallout 3 will be delivered to your Xbox message center in 7-10 days.  Redeem your code on Xbox.com or on your Xbox 360. Fallout 3 will have Xbox One backwards compatibility access when made available.

I suppose the option is still there, so no harm no foul on Bethesda’s part for neglecting to mention that small bit of information. Bethesda also only links to the official Xbox store in its announcement. No telling if this will extend to other retailers yet, but my guess is it will.

The announcement comes at a time when gamers are actively advising one another to give up on pre-orders altogether while publishers learn to get their act together in launching full, working products. We have no reason to suspect Fallout 4 is going to be the busted mistake that a handful of other similar large games have been recently…

…but it is still possible. That’s a risk you’re going to have to weigh for yourself. I’m over pre-orders, and I refuse to do them. Luckily, I’ve purchased Fallout 3 more times than I can count on a single hand, so no loss for me.
