Star Citizen’s FPS mode hits a snag, Chairman’s letter openly addresses issues

You have to hand it to Chris Roberts and the folks behind Star Citizen; they’ve been pretty transparent about their massively funded and wildly ambitious space game. If a problem hits, they talk about it openly, citing their 2012 campaign’s pledge to keep backers informed.

Which brings us to this overdue note from Chris Roberts. The Letter From The Chairman details the current state of Star Citizen‘s FPS mode, titled Star Marine. If you’re a Star Citizen fan, I suggest you hit the source link below and read the letter for yourself. It’s a long one, and it goes further into detail than I’ll mention here. It’s worth your time if you love the idea of the game, though.

Basically, the team wanted to release a publicly playable version of Star Marine right after PAX East, which went down a few months back. The problem, though, is that the legacy code in Star Marine isn’t meshing with their recently developed Generic Instance Manager. That GIM is the system that manages all the servers that make up the entirety of Star Citizen.

I’m not a developer, but my impression from this letter is that the code that currently runs Star Marine (a version that the team isn’t entirely happy with anyways) does not play nicely with the GIM. That means going back and rewriting the code so that the systems work together and the FPS mode plays the way the devs want it to play.

Some have reported that Star Marine has been put on indefinite hiatus or hold. That isn’t the case. The FPS team is tackling each issue (as highlighted in the letter linked below) currently. It’s going to take longer than they’d hoped, but they’re working on it.

When will we see Star Marine? Tonight, I don’t have an absolute answer for you. What I will tell you is that we know exactly what we have to do, and we’re already well on our way to doing it. With allocation of additional resources and increased cross-studio focus on the FPS portion of the game we are on our way… we’re just not there quite yet. I’m confident that with the significant updates and changes to the backend architecture discussed above that we will have an experience worthy of the Star Citizen name; it’s just going to take some additional integration and testing.

They are looking into releasing a build of Star Citizen with Star Marine disabled in order for feedback from players regarding all the non-FPS stuff that they’ve been working on.

Star Citizen is still coming along, but this ambitious title needs time and space. Get it… Space? Man, I am tired.
