EVE Online seeing lowest player count since 2008

by Joey Davidson | June 29, 2015

Let’s not read the above headline as “EVE Online” officially dying, shall we? Instead, it’s important to note that one of the most popular free-to-play space sims on earth is seeing a bit of a decline. EVE Online, as plotted by player Jestertrek, is now sitting at its lowest concurrent player count since 2008.

I’m not going to pretend to know the ins and outs of EVE Online, as it’s only a game that I simply watched in fascination rather than played. From speaking with several players in the community, there always seems to be an opinion that one or two major battles over the course of 2013 or 2014 marked the peak for the game. It’s then those factions dissolved and war became more skirmish oriented than epic battle focused.

Again, that’s all second hand information from someone who has never played the game. If you’re currently or were once an EVE Online player, would you say the game is in a decline? Why?

With EVE Valkyrie in focus for so many virtual reality platforms, it seems like popularity for the space sim would be ratcheting up rather than winding down.
