I didn’t think a world of plumbers, goombas and magic mushrooms could get any more trippy than it has been for the last 30 years. I was wrong. Mario Maker is pure mayhem, and it’s awesome.
Don’t know what Mario Maker is? Here’s the drill. Nintendo and players can create their own Mario levels from scratch. They can use any items from the games that they want. They can make coins shoot out of pipes, giant squids fly out of question boxes and Mario transform into the Wii Fit Trainer. The game can be re-skinned on the fly to look like Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World or New Super Mario Bros., and they all look great.
The gist is that absolute insanity pours out of the creations that people publish, and it’s going to be awesome. Creation is a snap, and I managed to whip out a full level in roughly five minutes.
My experience with the game came in two forms today. First, I watched a huge crowd of fans take in a contest as three players tried the same level over and over and over again until Nintendo killed the efforts and gave them all consolation prizes. That level? The leap of faith. The goal was to take one jump from a great height and find the perfect hole Mario has to hit in order to land atop the flagpole. Miss even slightly and it’s instant death.
The crowd cheered, they jeered and they gasped every single time a jump was made over the course of dozens and dozens of attempts, and it was fantastic. It’s actually the very last thing you see in this trailer for the game.
I tried this during my demo. Nope, couldn’t do it.
There was an automatic Mario level, too. That one was neat. You just don’t touch the controller at all and a ridiculous series of leaps, bounds and turtle shells carry you to the goal.
Mario Maker is going to be as bonkers as you think it is. The good news? All levels have to be beaten by their creator before they can be published. No matter how hard the level you find and try is, know that it’s been cleared at least once. Anything is possible.
