Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is dropping gunplay entirely

2008’s cult-hit Mirror’s Edge is widely praised for its seamless running throughout its beautiful white setting, but one area the game fell flat in was the gunplay. DICE has even admitted to making it an after thought considering that the goal of Mirror’s Edge was to get away from opponents, not kill them.

So what was the point of having guns in the first place? Because it was 2008, when every major video game production required use of firearms to put holes in enemies. I think it was video game law at the time.

Nowadays is 2015 though, and we’ve started to come around and see that video games can be used for more than an outlet of violence. EA and DICE have accustomed to the times and opted to drop guns altogether from Mirror’s Edge Catalyst. Senior Producer Sara Jansson confirmed that Faith will be gun-free in an E3 interview with Polygon.

“In Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, you won’t be using any guns at all. We’ve completely removed that aspect of the game. You can’t even pick them up.”

That doesn’t mean Faith won’t be getting her hands bloody. In fact, that’s the part of her body she will use the most when dispatching those that would dare get in her way.

“Faith will fight, but she doesn’t kill. Now the fighting is more of an extension of the movement. It builds on the flow. It fits a lot better with the game mechanics. When Faith is in flow, when she stitches together move after move without failing and keeps her momentum going, she’s actually invulnerable to bullets. That can keep her out of harm’s way. It’s only when she stops that she can get hurt.”

I fully support the design choice. Mirror’s Edge Catalyst will launch for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC on Feb. 23.
