Truth time? I’ve never played a musou game. Not Dynasty Warriors or Hyrule Warriors. They’ve eluded me until now. Not because I’ve actively avoided them, but because they always seemed like time sinks I simply couldn’t afford to get into.
Now, here I am at E3 with 15 minutes of One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 below my belt, and I want a musou game. Thanks a lot, Bandai Namco. I thought I’d escaped this one.
I just have the biggest soft spot for Luffy and his nakama, man. I don’t know what it is about the meat loving goofball and his buddies, but that series could probably push me to try anything.
Here’s what I know about musou games after my quick stint with this one: they make you feel super powerful. As legions of mermen attacked me, I used Luffy’s rubber abilities to absolutely wreak havoc on them. Friends, it wasn’t even fair.
There’s a light attack, heavy attack and super. You have a guard, dodge and support button, too. You’ll basically slowly press out button combos and absolutely destroy your enemies. On the PlayStation 4, the environment and fallen enemy count really didn’t slow the system or the experience at all.
I just blasted through these poor mermen while calling on help from Zoro, Sanji and, I believe, Sabo. It was great, and I now want a musou game in a huge way.
Good news, then. One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 is set to hit the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PS Vita and PC platforms on August 25, 2015 here in the U.S. Europe will see it on the 30th of the same month.
