Apple considered employing Uber to make same-day deliveries in some cities, a new report claims. The company has been piloting a same-day delivery program in selected areas since May, but it ultimately decided against a partnership with Uber.
“In recent months, Uber lost out on the opportunity to make deliveries in some cities for Apple Inc. and Starbucks Corp., which discussed tie-ups with Uber but then made deals with startup courier service Postmates, according to people familiar with the discussions,” The Wall Street Journal reports.
Apple’s existing same-day delivery option gives customers the opportunity to get their hands on urgent purchases within 4 hours for a $19 courier fee. The only problem is, it’s only available on certain items in the Apple Online Store (not the Apple Watch), and for a very small selection of zip codes in major cities.
By teaming up with Uber, Apple likely would have been able to expand the reach of this super-speedy delivery option, but it seems the company decided Uber wouldn’t be a suitable option. WSJ doesn’t give a reason why that was, but there is one possible explanation.
Gilt Groupe Inc., an e-commerce company, told WSJ that its deal with Uber fell through because the company was “unable to insure high-priced items.” Given that most of the products you buy from Apple are high-priced, it’s likely this was also the reason why Apple decided against the move.
For now, then, Apple is sticking with Postmates, which means you’ll only get same-day delivery on Apple products if you live within Postmates’ reach.
