I want to just simply list off for you some of the things that happen in the E3 trailer for Wattam, shown above.
A moustachioed cube takes his bowler hat from a beat-boxing flower. The cube, who of course is the mayor, eats his friend Ted, an apple, and poops him out. The poop is named Ricky. Then a bunch of sushis have a dance party on top of a cup of coffee before they all blow up. A toilet named Johnny chases a poop named Steve, and Steve has the option to pirouette. Then everyone blasts off into the sun.
This all makes perfect sense, of course. This is the newest game from Keita Takahashi, the creator of Katamari Damacy and Noby Noby Boy, two of the few games labeled on the PlayStation Store with the genre “Unique.” Because there’s nothing else like them – except maybe each other.
While Katamari Damacy very much had game elements to it – collection, completion, time – Noby Noby Boy was more a game that was simply played, with the goals being primarily about community accomplishments. Watching this trailer, Wattam looks more like the latter so far, but we hope we’ll find out more soon. It’s been a while since we’ve had a title from one of the most unique creators in games and we’re looking forward to joining his weird world again.
