PlayStation 4, The Witcher 3, Splatoon are the victors of May’s NPD results

Sony climbs back to the first place spot of the NPD results a month after Microsoft and the Xbox One scored an underdog victory in April. The PlayStation 4 is once again the best selling console on the video game market while sales all around sink during the month of May.

Overall, hardware and software sales dropped 13 percent when compared to last year. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 continue to drag the overall percentage down with less people buying them every year. Xbox One sales are stronger than ever, meaning that the weight of the previous generation consoles must be quite heavy.

On the software front it makes sense too. Less seventh generation software is being sold, but the eighth generation games saw an 8 percent boost. Unlike May 2015, last year’s May didn’t have a major AAA title hit the market, and Wolfenstein: The New Order filled in as the biggest title. Not a bad game, but hardly up for comparisons when put against the hype of  this year’s biggest game of the month, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

“Collectively, May 2015 launches sold 55% less dollars than May 2014 launches, however, catalog games outside of the launch month sold 3% more dollar volume compared to catalog games in May 2014.

Despite poor comparisons to May 2014 releases, eighth generation consoles software unit sales rose 8% in May 2015, and also gained 15 percentage points in overall software unit share to total 54%.”

CD Projekt RED’s massive RPG is already confirmed to be a huge hit after selling 4 million copies in the first two weeks. NPD confirms that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was the biggest game of the month, followed by Mortal Kombat X and Grand Theft Auto V.

Another welcome addition to the top 10 list is Nintendo’s Splatoon, which closed out the month in the number 5 spot as the highest ranking console exclusive. Nintendo hasn’t commented on its success yet, but if it’s doing just as well in North America as it is in Japan, the big N is no doubt pleased with the progress its multiplayer extravaganza has caused.
