Evidence is piling up about a darker side of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain that we have yet to see. And we don’t mean torture, warfare, or livestock theft via parachute either, but rather… microtransactions!
Dun dun dun!
Although it might not surprise many, considering Konami’s insistence on keeping up with mobile trends, several retailers have reported that the game will be featuring “optional in-game purchases.” The pre-order option for both the UK’s and Italy’s PlayStation Stores seem to indicate as such.
Previews of the game too, like IGN’s, have pointed out the presence of “reduced time features” in regards to Mother Base construction. These options are not available “in offline mode.” Meaning, if you have 500 Sneak Gems and 10 Kill Coins, can you build your M-16 a few minutes faster?
Metal Gear Online is also another probable culprit with character skins, maps, and special bonuses for those who wish to level up faster. Multiplayer and microtransactions go hand in hand.
Of course, these “in-game purchases” could just be referring to DLC packages as well, but Konami has been totally tight lipped on additional money beyond the initial purchase of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Judging by recent trends, I don’t know what to expect. I wouldn’t rule out an Assassin’s Creed Unity style companion app at this point, judging by how Konami claims to be mainly mobile focused from here on out. It’s a stretch, but hardly beyond the realm of possibility.
We’ll probably be finding out more at E3 next week during Sony’s presentation. Hopefully, these announcements won’t make the segment more awkward than it is already going to be.
