Spotify on Wednesday announced that it now has more than 20 million subscribers and more than 75 million active users. Subscribers pay for Spotify Premium while the remaining number of users simply use the ad-supported version of Spotify. The latest figures represent growth of about 5 million subscribers since January, when Spotify said it had 15 million paying customers.
Spotify will face headwinds in the coming weeks, however, when Apple Music launches on June 30. The service was introduced during Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference earlier this week and will cost $9.99 per month for a single subscription; it also offers a more affordable $14.99 family plan that provides access for up to 6 users.
While aspects of Apple Music are compelling, I argued recently that I’ll probably stick to Spotify for its sharing features and, simply, because I already have amassed a large collection of custom playlists and music through Spotify.
Will Apple Music slow Spotify’s growth, or help spur awareness of premium subscription services among those who don’t already pay? We’ll need to wait until Spotify releases its subscriber figures a few months from now to find out.
