Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice announced by SEGA for Nintendo 3DS

Sonic Fire and Ice

In a surprise twist, SEGA has just announced an unexpected collaboration between Sonic the Hedgehog and the 1983 Ralph Bakshi animated cult film Fire and Ice. You know, the rotoscoped one where the woman runs around in the purple bikini the whole film?

Oh wait… no, this is a sequel to last year’s major flop, Sonic Boom. Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice is the next Sonic the Hedgehog game scheduled to take place in the same universe as the new animated series, the console game Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, and its equally despised Nintendo 3DS spin-off, Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal.

Meh, I think my idea was cooler.

Much like Shattered Crystal, Fire & Ice will be developed by Sanzaru Games and will focus on 2D gameplay. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy will each have their own unique abilities, and this new game looks to add mechanics that involve fire and ice elements. Sounds like Pixeljunk Shooter to me, and that game was awesome!

Meanwhile, Sonic Dash has been downloaded 100 million times, so I’m going to be very interested in seeing how this traditional platform game plays out alongside the far more successful mobile line-up. For once, I think I’m cheering for the mobile crowd.
