The iPhone 6c may be Apple’s most mysterious device in years. We’re still not sure if the company is working on a new 4-inch plastic phone at all, or when it might actually launch. Thankfully, a new report out of China may finally reveal the release window for the rumored handset.
According to the Economic Daily News, Apple has tapped AU Optronics to produce 4-inch screens for a new device. The displays are apparently set to ship in the first quarter of 2016, suggesting a full smartphone may not be far behind.
The iPhone 6c is expected to fill in as Apple’s cheapest smartphone once it finally launches. The device could feature a plastic design similar to the iPhone 5c, but pack-in upgraded specs, That includes NFC and Touch ID for Apple Pay support along with a new Sony camera.
At this point it seems unlikely Apple will be able to launch the iPhone 6c this year, though the Cupertino company is probably up to something. Even if we don’t get our hands on the 4-inch phone until 2016, it may still get announced onstage this fall just so that small handset fans know they haven’t been left behind.
