Bravely Second

During its Nintendo Micro Direct presentation on Monday, Nintendo of America confirmed it has partnered up with Square Enix to bring Bravely Second: End Layer to Western shores. The highly anticipated sequel will be arriving for the Nintendo 3DS in 2016.

The first game was a surprise hit for Square Enix, selling a million copies in the West after the company assumed nobody wanted it. It was always assumed that the sequel would follow suit to try and replicate that success.

However, in Japan, the sequel opened up to far less impressive numbers than its predecessor. This could mean two things: fans in Japan are waiting for an improved “International Version” with all the improvements that the Western version brings along, or Square Enix is making this franchise with the intention of attracting its Western audience from here on out. The new politics and deeper story of the sequel seems to run alongside the narrative trends in Western games.

Either way, I’m glad this is happening. Every game we get from Japan helps secure interest for the future. Hopefully, Square Enix will continue to recognize the demand for JRPGs on the Nintendo 3DS and will announce plans to bring out another game within the coming year.

Bravely Second: End Layer will launch for the Nintendo 3DS in 2016.
