Surprise Asus ZenFone surfaces

ASUS just brought the ZenFone 2 to America last week, but the company may already be gearing up for its next big release. A new device spotted in China’s TENAA certification website might turn out to be the ZenFone 3, or a cheaper option from the Taiwanese firm.

The device in question sports a 5-inch 720p display and comes in black, white, red, blue, purple, gold or silver. It also appears to pack a 64-bit quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage. an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing shooter.

Overall that’s a pretty big step down from the ZenFone 2, which packs a 5.5-inch 1080p display and up to 4GB of RAM. It’s possible the ZenFone 3 could be even more affordable than its predecessor. Then again, the company recently hinted that future smartphones could come packing some sort of biometric scanner, which could add to the expense of the phone.

We’re not expecting the ZenFone 3 to make its official debut until early 2016, a year after the ZenFone 2 was unveiled at CES 2015 in January. Of course, it’s possible ASUS could speed up its release cycle to stay competitive, or this could be more of a ZenFone 2 “mini.” Either way, it may not be long before this new mystery device makes an official appearance.
