LG looks prepped to scoop up Meerkat

For the past few months Meerkat has played scrappy underdog to the Twitter-owned Periscope, but a new trademark filing suggests it may soon have the backing of a much larger company.

A recent trademark spotted by¬†Phandroid suggests that LG may have already acquired Meerkat, or is preparing to. The South Korean tech giant recently submitted a filing for “Meerkat” with the USPTO with a similar focus on mobile video. Here’s what it says:

IC 009. US 021 023 026 036 038. G & S: IP camera; Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) Cameras; Cameras for surveillance; Photographic apparatus and instruments; Cameras; Webcams; Mobile phones; Smart phones; Application software for smart phones; Application software for smart phone cameras.

We’re not sure why the company would trademark the term, but it suggests some sort of deal between the two firms.

Meerkat would get a big boost if it was acquired by LG. For starters, it would probably ship¬†preinstalled on future LG phones and other devices. Meerkat would also gain access to LG’s resources and technology, potentially giving it a huge advantage over Periscope in the long run.

Neither company has responded to the trademark application. We’ll likely know pretty soon if an acquisition happens, though it’s possible this could all add up to nothing.
