Witcher 3 is having trouble with Xbox One’s standby mode

If you’re playing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on Xbox One, you might want to save your game and exit when you’re done, at least until a patch hits.

Users on Reddit and the official Witcher 3 forums are reporting that they’ve lost some save progress when putting their console into standby while the game is still active.

Users are typically seeing this manifest when the game pops up a message saying “You cannot save right now,” which is what comes up when you’re in the middle of a story quest. Quitting and reloading the game seems to remove it, though some are getting stuck on a loading screen as a result and having to wipe their saves completely. Ouch.

A bright side to this is that it sounds like you can take advantage of Microsoft’s decision to store all your saves in the cloud by deleting the save from your console and resyncing it. This can be done by selecting the game in the Xbox One OS, hitting the Start button, selecting Manage Game, and then deleting local saves. Some PC users are stating they’re seeing the issue as well – it looks like a setting meant to keep your game from being saved while a script is running is getting stuck in “on” position.

CD Projekt Red’s Philipp Weber, quest designer on The Witcher 3, said on the forum that the team is working to fix the issue as quickly as possible. It doesn’t fix it for players who have already lost progress, but at least it shows that they’re aware of it. In the meantime, make sure to keep multiple game saves and  to save and quit your game when you’re done playing.
