The Oculus Rift is intended to be an open platform, and that’s still the case. Any content can be released for and run on the platform.

That includes pornographic material, confirmed founder Palmer Luckey at the Silicon Valley Virtual Reality Conference.

“The Rift is an open platform. We don’t control what software can be run on it,” said Luckey. “And that’s a big deal.”

It’s hard to say, with Facebook owning the platform, if that will remain true in the future, but pornographic content has driven technology adoption in the past, and it could certainly be the case for something like virtual reality, as well. While Sony’s Project Morpheus likely won’t see this kind of content thanks to its affiliation with the PlayStation 4 and the control Sony exercises over that platform via its storefront, Oculus is a PC product. Unless Facebook launches an app store for the Rift and finds a way to lock down outside content from running on it, the idea of blocking porn from the device would be difficult to implement.

There’s already VR content of this sort online, and if it does help push the technology, it’s not likely Facebook will try to suppress it. Or, if it does, someone will step up to cash in.
