Ninja Theory, the developer behind games like Heavenly Sword, Enslaved, and DmC: Devil May Cry, is hard at work on Hellblade, which they plan to show gameplay of in just a few weeks.
And when I say hard at work, I mean really difficult work. Game development isn’t easy, and Ninja Theory is giving us a peek into the process of getting a vertical slice demo together before they actually unveil the gameplay itself.
In a way, it’s a microcosm of the full process of development. You have to put all the disparate systems your team has been working on into the same place and make them work together, look good doing it, and be comprehensible to a player. Then, you polish it to a shine. With Hellblade, though, Ninja Theory doesn’t have the help of a big publisher like Sony or Capcom backing them up – this is currently an independent effort the team is developing and publishing themselves. Not only is the design of the game in their hands, but the focus testing and project management, too, and they’re not afraid to be frank about how much work it is. It’s a fascinating look into the developer’s process.

There’s no current release date for Hellblade, but when it does come out, it’ll hit PC and PlayStation 4.
