HTC One M9 Mini definitely isn’t coming, here’s why (Update)

If you like the HTC One M9 but wish it came in a smaller size we have some bad news. The company says it’s definitely not making a “Mini” variant of its latest flagship phone, and may be killing off the compact series entirely.

HTC’s North Asia president Jack Tong announced the news last week in Taiwan during an event focused on the beefed up One M9+, which packs a 5.2-inch Quad HD display. “Overall the industry is moving towards new phones over 5 inches in size and our product roadmap is close to that of the industry,” he said.

The company’s previous One Mini handsets never really blew us away. Still, for anyone who prefers a smaller smartphone this is bad news. You can still track down the One mini and One mini 2, but both models are pretty outdated at this point. If you’re looking for a powerful fun-sized Android smartphone then Sony’s Xperia Z Compact series is probably your best bet.

As for HTC, it sounds like the company is focused on releasing progressively bigger smartphones. We’ve already seen a string of new devices unveiled in Asia, but for now American shoppers are still limited to the flagship One M9. Hopefully it’s not too long before we get a new HTC phablet here in the U.S. as well.

Update: Never say never, right? Speaking with PhoneScoop, HTC spokesman Jeff Gordon said that Tong “did not say HTC is not planning any more mini versions of its phones.” He added: “To be clear I’m not confirming HTC is coming out with an HTC One M9 mini, only that Jack Tong didn’t say what some press are attributing to him.”
