Vivo X5 Pro’s 32-megapixel selfie camera may also scan your retinas

Vivo may not have the name recognition of Apple, Samsung or Xiaomi, but the Chinese phone-maker’s upcoming X5 Pro could still turn some heads. The company recently teased another exciting new feature for its upcoming flagship phone.

According to Vivo, the X5 Pro will offer some sort of eye-scanning sensors. The company announced the feature on Facebook, promising “extra security for your apps.” We’re guessing the new technology could be built into the device’s front-facing camera, which will apparently be able to create 32-megapixel selfies using some technological trickery.

We’re also expecting a 6-inch display, a battery between 3200mAh and 3500mAh, a Snapdragon 615 processor and 3GB of RAM. The design could feature a curved metal frame and rounded glass, giving it a high-end look to compete with the iPhone 6 and the Galaxy S6.

Overall, the Vivo X5 Pro sounds like a pretty nice device, though we’re still not sold on the promise of a retina-scanning smartphone. It seems unlikely the technology will work as well as the best mobile fingerprint readers or even face-scanning alternatives. Hopefully Vivo proves us wrong.
