Star Wars: The Force Awakens details spilled in Vanity Fair pictures (Update)

It’s May the 4th, and Vanity Fair is celebrating by publishing some new images and information from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Be warned, there are some definite potential spoilers here if you read between the lines.

Vanity Fair sent acclaimed photographer Annie Leibovitz to the set of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and came back with some very interesting information. There are  some unsurprising things in the pictures above, such as Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) climbing aboard his X-Wing, or Daisy Ridley being directed by J.J. Abrams, but it’s the other pictures that have some new info.

First off, we have our first official confirmation that Adam Driver is playing the new villain Kylo Ren. This had been suspected for some time, but nothing had been confirmed before now. We had also heard rumors that Lupita Nyong’o was playing a CGI character, and now it is confirmed by seeing a picture of her covered in tracking dots. We also learn the character is named Maz Kanata, and that Kanata is a pirate with a castle as we see a collection of smugglers, thieves and pirates hanging out in what is described as “the main hall of pirate Maz Kanata’s castle.”

While none of this information should be considered super spoiler in and of themselves, if you’ve been following some of the rumors that have been circulating for some time, a lot of plot points just got confirmed. That’s all we will say on those matters, but the information is out there if you do some looking around.

Be sure to check out Vanity Fair’s video below, and beyond that a collection of other images from the upcoming film.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18, 2015.

Update:

We’ve added another image, via Star War Universe, of the Stormtrooper known as Captain Phasma. (That chrome Stormtrooper from the most recent trailer.) According to more details in the new VF piece, Captain Phasma is being played by Gwendoline Christie, who fans know as Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones. The new character is described as a First Order officer.
