We’ve seen plenty of Persona 5 in motion, but with the highly anticipated RPG’s official PlayStation Japan website going live this weekend, a first batch of direct-feed screenshots gives us a look at some excellent still frames.
Our heroes very obviously live in Japan, as noted by the crowded trains, Japanese text everywhere, and the fact that Atlus is based in Japan. The company has an uncanny ability to perfectly capture the many faces of its home country, be it the bustling city or a relaxing countryside town. If you thought Persona 3 and 4 were the most genuine way to lose yourself in a modern day Japan setting, Persona 5 is just the next step up from them.
These three protagonists and their weird pet cat thing are homeless, but the twist is that they are secretly a band of thieves. They hang out in restaurants, roam the streets, and steal from demons to make a living. The idea runs with the themes of not being tied down to an everyday life, and Atlus is really playing up the whole romantic thief side of its aesthetic with long capes, masks, and an excellent shot of our hero’s silhouette plastered against a full moon.
In his prison shot, I can’t help but think he looks just like Catherine’s hapless protagonist, Vincent Brooks.
Persona 5 will be released for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 in 2015. Ink me down for a day one purchase.
