Director Josh Trank announced on Friday he’s no longer involved in the Star Wars universe. Trank had been chosen to direct the second standalone Star Wars Anthology film, which was set to follow Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One. But with films like Fantastic Four (and probably the sequel) on Trank’s plate, the director decided he’d rather “move forward on a different path.”

After a year of having the incredible honor of developing with the wonderful and talented people at Lucasfilm, I’m making the personal decision to move forward on a different path. I’ve put a tremendous amount of thought into this, and I know deep down in my hear that I want to pursue some original creative opportunities. That said, the Star Wars universe has always been one of my biggest influences, and I couldn’t be more excited to witness its future alongside my millions of fellow Star Wars fans.

Trank burst onto the scene with 2012’s Chronicle, and is bringing that same gritty emotion to this year’s Fantastic Four reboot. According to his statement, Trank would rather do his own original stuff than rather be confined to the Star Wars universe. Must be hard to walk away from one of Hollywood’s biggest franchises. Did Trank and Lucasfilm have a falling out? We may never know.

With the film not slated to hit until 2018, Disney will no doubt take its time finding a replacement to helm the untitled project. We’ll let you know as soon as an announcement is made.
