Final Fantasy XIV fake fighting game trailer is everything I love about the “new” Square Enix

If you need more convincing of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn’s supremacy as the most exciting MMORPG out there and that its development team employs some of the most “in-touch” decision makers, then let this trailer be the final say in your quest for enlightenment.

A new fake trailer directly from Square Enix and main scenario writer Kazutoyo Maehiro re-envisions the popular MMORPG as a fighting game, capitalizing on the blitz of popular fighters like Tekken 7, Street Fighter V, and Mortal Kombat X. It’s everything you could possibly dream of with taunts, special moves, and a camera that seems a little too smart for its own good.

Man oh man, do I wish this was real.

What’s especially pleasing about this trailer is that it embodies everything that Square Enix has been trying to shake up about its inner workings. No longer one to sit above the gaming world in an ivory tower of elitism, the company has turned to lesser known and younger employees to handle its developing and marketing, men and women who better understand this younger, digital world.

This kind of self-deprecating masterpiece would have been unheard of from Square Enix five years ago, but its stockpiled pretension and self-importance seem to be on the way out as this new generation turns to viral marketing and just plain having fun with its classic franchises.

I’m liking the new Square Enix a lot these days, probably more so than I ever have since the merger way back in 2003.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn’s first major expansion, Heavensward, launches for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC on June 23.
