Despite throwing its support behind CurrentC last year, it appears Best Buy has recognized the merits and superiority of Apple Pay. During Apple’s earnings call on Monday, the Cupertino company noted that its digital wallet service is coming to Best Buy retail locations this fall; if you want more instant gratification, you’ll be able to use Apple Pay inside Best Buy’s updated iOS app starting now.
Following Apple Pay’s launch last year, there was a major kerfuffle over retailers seemingly blocking Apple’s service in favor of CurrentC, which was being developed by the Merchant Customer Exchange. Best Buy was one of many companies that backed the service, which, at the time, seemed like a major hurdle for Apple Pay’s growth. But following criticism from the public, CurrentC clarified the language of its agreement with merchants, giving Apple the opportunity to strike.
Best Buy is a huge get for Apple. Not only is it one of the largest electronics retailers on the market, but the deal could signal a full on Apple Pay invasion into the retail space. Apple’s service is adding support for Discover card soon, so it’s only a matter of time before iPhone users can pay with their device almost everywhere.
I’m sure other big retail stores will follow in Best Buy’s path throughout the year. Apple Pay will need all the supporters it can get, too, especially with Samsung Pay set to launch in a few months.
