The Spider-Man movie Marvel Studios has planned for July 28, 2017 isn’t the only flick fans have to look forward to. Sony on Thursday announced that a separate animated film is in the works, and it’s being helmed by The Lego Movie directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller; the two will also write the script for the film, which is currently scheduled for a July 20, 2018 release.
The movie will “exist independently of the project in the live-action Spider-Man universe,” Sony said. Not much else is known about the animated flick, though getting Lord and Miller onboard is a great start. It’ll be a little strange to have two completely separate Spider-Man movies hit the big screen, but the web slinger is one of Marvel’s most beloved superheroes, so I doubt fans will mind.
As for the live-action version of Spider-Man, he’s expected to make his first appearance in Captain America: Civil War, which is scheduled for a May 6, 2016 release. One thing’s for sure: animated or not, we’ll be seeing a lot more of the younger, more wise-cracking superhero in the coming years.
Considering what Lord and Miller did for The Lego Movie, I’d say Spider-Man is in good hands.
