Metal Gear Online supports 16 players on both PC and current-gen consoles

If you are expecting Battlefield sized skirmishes in the upcoming Metal Gear Online multiplayer mode, then you might be in for a little disappointment. Konami has confirmed that the game will be supporting only 16 players across all three current generation platforms: the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. That’s not cross platform play, to be clear. That’s each different platform capable of hosting 16 players.

Sorry PC gamers, but it looks like the consoles are still holding you back after all these years. Either that, or 16 is just the preferred choice of the designers. I might be leaning towards the latter because of how tight and fast the gameplay footage flows. Any more players would just be cumbersome.

Those who play the game on the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 will only be able to join matches with up to 12 players, according to the official Japanese website.

Metal Gear Online is the online multiplayer portion of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. It will feature two squads of soldiers, of which one player will get to be Snake, and they will have to compete with one another in several different gaming modes like an “infiltration and extract” mission or just good, old fashioned deathmatch.

Metal Gear Online will launch on Sept. 1 alongside Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and it will be available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
