Etrian Odyssey II Untold “Classic Mode” gameplay trailer

Etrian Odyssey II Untold: The Fafnir Knight adds a new story element to the mix which was never present in the first release of Etrian Odyssey II on the original Nintendo DS. This added story arc comes with the sacrifice of the franchise’s excellent character customization though. With predetermined characters for the plot to unfold, fans are not given a chance to experiment with job classes or the “pure” RPG experience that the game excels in.

That’s why these games come with a “classic mode,” an entirely separate path which does away with the story elements but adds all the benefits of the remake’s mechanics and graphics. Atlus has a new trailer detailing the new intricacies like the Grimoire Stones which allow characters to use the job skills of their allies. Sounds like a nice little mix to add to an already excellent formula.

Square Enix has been causing so much ruckus lately that I almost forgot about Etrian Odyssey, but it’s nice that Atlus can still crank out a trailer that pulls me right back in. This is my favorite handheld RPG franchises these days, beating out even Bravely Default and Fire Emblem, and I can’t wait for this new one.

Etrian Odyssey II Untold: The Fafnir Knight will be released on the Nintendo 3DS this summer in North America.
