A new Mana game could be happening for series’ 25th anniversary

Secret of Mana (1)

After Star Ocean 5 was announced earlier this week, I was beginning to think that there was only one more classic Square Enix franchise that needed a modern day revival: Mana. It’s been two generations since Dawn of Mana, the last main  game to be released in the franchise, and fans need to dig even further back to Legend of Mana to find one actually worth playing.

SaGa is coming back. Star Ocean is coming back. Kingdom Hearts is coming back. Final Fantasy is coming back. Dragon Quest is taking its time, but its coming back. Parasite Eve already came back. Yup, the time is right. Mana needs to join these ranks.

Rise of Mana is a decent little free-to-play game, but not exactly what fans are looking for, even if it is coming to the PS Vita next month in Japan. Longtime enthusiasts need the franchises’s cute fantasy world and beautiful music to make a break onto modern consoles or handhelds in a big way.

Thankfully, I don’t think we’ll have to wait that long. The Mana series turns 25 next year, and hints have abounded about a potential new game. The most recent hints comes from the series current producers Masaru Oyamada and Yusuke Suda at Square Enix. Suda, who developed Rise of Mana, had this to say about his compatriot.

Mana will celebrate its 25th anniversary next year, and we have plans on rebooting the brand. And I believe that Rise of Mana will lead the charge. Depending on how things turn out, the flow of things may change, but we’re still excited, nonetheless.”

“Also, I believe that Oyamada will make the next generation Mana, so I believe this is a nice way to pass the baton [for a closing statement in the interview]”

Oyamada continued this line of thinking with baby mittens, not wanting to spill the beans or possibly get in trouble at work.

“I really can’t say anything about it at this point in time. Firstly, I believe we’d like to offer Rise of Mana as a free-to-play title for those who’ve played Mana games in the past and those who haven’t, as a way to expand its range.”

“While on the subject of the Mana series, next year is its 25th anniversary, and we definitely have a lot prepared for it. We will reveal more information when the time comes, so please look forward to it.”

Just hurry up and announce it already. We are waiting on the edge of our seats here! It would also be nice if you could spare us the anxiety of a localization and announce that at the same time, Square Enix.

What other Square Enix franchises deserve a new chance? Einhander, Front Mission, ActRaiser? The list goes on, but it’s nice to see all of its main offerings lining up once again.
