Jawbone announces UP4 band with NFC payments, more affordable UP2

Jawbone today unveiled the latest additions to its fitness tracker lineup. The new UP4 is a premium band that’s capable of making mobile payments via NFC, while the UP2 is a more affordable midrange offering priced at just $99.

The UP4 is very similar to Jawbone’s existing UP3; it offers the same 24/7 fitness and sleep tracking capabilities, as well as a heart rate monitor and water-resistant design. But it comes with a slightly bigger price tag, thanks to its new mobile payment capabilities.

The UP4 has NFC built-in, allowing users in the U.S. to make contactless payments wherever they are accepted. However, the service is currently available only to those with eligible American Express cards.

“We’re delighted to partner with American Express to launch UP4, our most advanced and stylish tracker that’s small enough to wear 24/7,” said Travis Bogard, vice president of product management and strategy at Jawbone.

“They provided the innovative and forward-thinking approach needed to create this new experience, combined with a sophisticated and robust payment system, and a wide range of supported merchants.”

Once you have your UP4, you can connect it to your American Express card within the latest UP app for Android and iOS. The device itself will be available this summer, and it will be priced at $199.99 — just $20 more than the UP3.

If you’re not interested in the mobile payments aspect, and you’re looking for a more affordable fitness tracker, Jawbone’s new UP2 might be a better fit for you. It looks a lot like the UP3 and the UP4 and offers a lot of the same features, and it’s only $99.

Features that are missing with the UP2 include a heart rate monitor and advanced sleep tracking, but it boasts the same 7-day battery life, a splash-proof design, and the ability to track steps, calories burned, and lots more.

What’s more, the UP2 is available starting today for customers in the U.S. via the Jawbone online store.
