Game development studio 2K Australia has closed, according to information obtained by Kotaku Australia, with all positions in the studio being eliminated.
The office, located in Canberra, had played a big role in the BioShock series and was the lead developer on Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel in addition to other titles.
According to Kotaku‘s source, the studio was looking at moving to Melbourne, a few hundred miles away, causing an exodus of upper management.
2K provided the following statement:
We can confirm we have taken steps to begin the studio closure process for 2K Australia in order to better manage ongoing development costs while improving the working proximity of our creative teams. We are very grateful for the team’s valuable contributions to numerous 2K projects, and are working with affected staff to explore reassignment opportunities where possible.
It’s never good to see a game studio closing, and there aren’t exactly a whole ton in Australia. We hope the employees can find opportunities or maybe even start up their own studio before too long.
