SEGA has tapped the retro gaming masters at M2 to convert three more of its old timey favorites into 3D Classics for the Nintendo 3DS. This third bunch of oldies includes games that were released for the SEGA Genesis rather than arcades, but you won’t see me complaining after reading the offerings.
First up is Street of Rage 2, the best game in SEGA’s classic beat ’em up franchise. Yuzo Koshiro’s slick dance beat soundtrack is excellent, and I’ll never get tired of controlling Skate. He’s such a cool character. This one will be released in July.
August’s release is the highlight here as is none other than Treasure’s classic run n’ gunner, Gunstar Heroes. I’ll admit I’m not as big of a fan as others, but that’s only because I played it retrospectively. There are some people who think this is the greatest game of all time because they played it on the SEGA Genesis in its heyday. I’ll most likely be picking this one up.
Last up is the September release, and that is Sonic the Hedgehog 2. It’s the best of the original Sonic the Hedgehog games, which is why I might be picking it up as well. However, the times certainly have changed when Sonic the Hedgehog is the least sentimental of a pack of Genesis gems.
3D Streets of Rage 2, 3D Gunstar Heroes, and 3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will be released on the Nintendo 3DS this summer for $5.99 each, and they will come with additional modes and features never before seen in the games.
