Mobius Final Fantasy is looking more and more legit everyday. Square Enix is hyping this game as a console experience designed for smartphones, and it looks every bit the part.
Our protagonist Wal, who recently underwent a wardrobe change, can transform into several different classic Final Fantasy jobs. The trailer shows off the Ranger, White Mage, and Thief job classes in some dramatic battles, and also announces that the Dark Knight, Warrior, and Hunter classes will be available. Wal also has the ability to summon all of your favorite classic summon monsters.
Yup, it’s definitely a Final Fantasy game now.
The weird news, though, is the arrival of Garland. Longtime fans will recognize him as both the first and final boss of the original Final Fantasy game. He certainly looks like the original Garland, but Final Fantasy spans many universes with similar iterations of characters popping up in each entry. It’s hard to say if this is the same guy or not.
The trailer also introduces a new character named Eco, a little Tinkerbell looking fairy. She heals Wal in battle when he needs it.
Color me impressed. Square Enix has a decent reputation with mobile games thanks to the Chaos Rings games, but it also has laid a few stinkers out there too like All The Bravest. If Mobius Final Fantasy turns out to be half as good as it looks, it will certainly solidify its reputation. I still feel like I’d rather play it on my Vita, though.
Mobius Final Fantasy will be released on iOS and Android in Japan in 2015. Square Enix has stated it will come to the West, but has not given it a release window yet.
