GTA V rises to the occasion, becomes the second most popular game on Steam

Just how popular is Grand Theft Auto V? Go ahead, give me a good solid guess, because you still might come up way short. The game hasn’t even been available for an entire day, and it is already toppling the competition by becoming the second most popular game on Steam!

That happened just overnight! The game peaked at 196,000 during its first day of availability, and that was before it rolled out across the entire planet. We can only suspect that it will continue to climb the ranks as more and more buyers jump aboard.

As of writing, the game has fallen to third place behind Counter Strike: Global Offensive and the reigning champion DOTA 2, but the number of gamers playing is on the upswing, totaling out at 216,624, its highest point for day two. Counter Strike only has 218,915 playing now, so Grand Theft Auto V should be able to close that gap by the end of the day.

DOTA 2 sits comfortable at 600,616 right now with a peak of 773,130.

Grand Theft Aut V Steam Popularity

That’s a yokozuna of a champion right there, and I doubt Grand Theft Auto will be able to catch that any time soon. We’ve seen it make mincemeat of console records though, so who knows? Might not be as long as we thought.

We’ll just have to wait and see as Americans come home from school and work to see how those numbers fluctuate. Should be quite interesting.
