I don’t usually think of my home state of Minnesota as being a place where crazy stuff happens. That’s supposed to be Florida, right? But crazy stuff happens everywhere.
A Minneapolis man, according to the Star Tribune, stole a bag containing two Nintendo DS systems and more than 30 games from an 8-year-old boy. We all know stealing is bad, but usually people don’t really know or care who they’re stealing from. They usually just climb in through a window and take anything that looks like it might transform into a pile of cash at any second.
In this case it was just a tad different. Dave Schmotter knew though, because the 8-year-old victim had visited him in the hospital.
The boy’s mother is friends with Schmotter and was visiting him in November, bringing him some fast food. The boy left the case unattended, and Schmotter was caught on surveillance hanging the case on his IV stand and disguising it with a shirt. This wasn’t Schmotter’s first brush with the law and, according to the boy’s mother, Dave “steals just about anything he can get his hands on.”
The boy got his games, valued at $1,000 in total, back, and Dave has been charged with one count of theft that could land him some additional time behind bars for his trouble.
