YouTube on Wednesday started to send e-mails to partners alerting them of incoming changes. The company will soon allow customers to sign up for ad-free subscriptions to the service.
The model reflects what YouTube recently implemented with YouTube Music Key, its subscription-based music video service. It’s currently free during a trial period, but will eventually cost $7.99 per month and provides free access to ad-free music videos, offline storage, full albums, a customized home page and more.
“Over the past several months, we’ve taken bold new steps to bring these experiences to life,” YouTube said in an e-mail to creators on Wednesday. “Since inviting hundreds of thousands of fans into our YouTube Music Key Beta, we’ve seen tremendous engagement. We’re excited to build on this momentum by taking another big step in favor of choice: offering fans an ads-free version of YouTube for a monthly fee. By creating a new paid offering, we’ll generate a new source of revenue that will supplement your fast growing advertising revenue.”
YouTube said that the changes will be reflected in new terms that will be sent to partners, and it’s unclear how much of the subscription revenues will trickle down to channels just yet. YouTube also didn’t reveal how much the service will cost.
