It’s been just under a year since the OnePlus One first hit the market, but it looks like the popular smartphone may not get a sequel any time soon. A recent Weibo post from OnePlus CEO Liu Zuohu suggests the company could ride out most of 2015 without releasing a new handset.
Spotted by GizmoChina, the post references a recent roundup of the best smartphones that prominently features the 11-month-old OnePlus One. He adds a short cryptic message, suggesting that the device will remain on the market for another six months. That would put the OnePlus Two release at very late 2015 or even early next year.
Then again, it’s also possible Liu means the OnePlus One will be a strong contender until halfway through 2015, suggesting a follow-up device could arrive much sooner. However, most of the other devices listed above are relatively new, and OnePlus seems pretty secure in the current smartphone market. So we may not see a OnePlus Two announced until after Apple rolls out the iPhone 6s or Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 makes it debut.
We’re still holding out hope OnePlus doesn’t make us wait too long for a new smartphone. The company’s original flagship is still a good device for its price, but we’d love to see the Chinese startup apply its same business model to a new device with cutting edge hardware and an updated design.
