SOS FANTOMES

Remember when 2K Sports took down the servers for NBA 2K14, broke everyone’s saves, and then told us all to buy the new version? And then remember how everyone was super ticked?

2K Sports has, after some pretty harsh (and deservedly so) reactions from fans and press alike, reversed its decision.

In a statement to Game Informer, a 2K Sports spokesperson said that “2K has fully restored the NBA 2k14 servers and all online services,” and that the publisher is “extending the support of all NBA 2K servers from 18 to 27 months following each release.”

“The opinions of our community continue to have a positive impact on our businesses decisions as we strive to create the best possible experience for all our fans.”

Translation: We shut it off, all the angry ghosts came out, and we regretted our decision.

While 2K (and EA) sure would like it if people would just buy the new one every year, the incremental improvements and sometimes baffling feature changes can make it unappealing to upgrade to the next consecutive version. The servers simply can’t stay up forever – there’s a point at which it starts to cost more than it’s worth to keep servers up. Giving fans two years of new releases to decide to upgrade should allow for plenty of time, though.
