Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix’s 2013 reboot of Tomb Raider is now the most successful game in the series’ history, Square Enix announced today.
A couple years ago, just months after the Tomb Raider reboot hit shelves, Square Enix was disappointed with the game’s sales. The contemporaneous CEO, Yoichi Wada, called the sales weak, saying the publisher was “very disappointed to see that the high scores did not translate to actual sales performance.”
Today, we’re looking at a different situation. The game has sold, across Mac, PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, over 8.5 million copies. According to Crystal Dynamics, this is more than any other game in the franchise’s history. This is in addition to its initial sales, which set first day and month records for the series at the time.
When stories about disappointing sales make the rounds, we worry a franchise will get canned or shipped off to a low-bidding studio that doesn’t quite have the resources to get the character and world right. Tomb Raider sold well right away, though, and the complaints about poor sales rung hollow. The game did better than fine, though, and the announcement helps give us confidence that Square Enix will give Crystal Dynamics the backing it needs – with some help from Microsoft no doubt – to make sure Rise of the Tomb Raider is the best game it can be.
