Netflix has ordered a fourth season of House of Cards for a premiere in 2016.
Possibly the biggest surprise of this news is that this hadn’t already happened.
Netflix is not governed by public numbers of viewership like traditional television is, nor does it have to answer to advertisers, but it does have to keep an eye on the bottom line. If not enough subscribers are engaging with a show, it is in turn not bringing in new subscribers or helping to retain current ones.
This, however, is House of Cards. Being one of the most talked about shows from any source — be it old guard networks or the new streaming upstarts — and winning Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards by Kevin Spacey for his role as Frank Underwood, you know it’s helping Netflix with all of the metrics that matter.
House of Cards season 4 will begin filming this summer and premiere on Netflix in early 2016.
